Depends what you want. Went for the first time in February and decided we may as well just accept that we're total tourists, so we stayed right near Times Square in the Wyndham. Cheap by NY standards, perfectly nice (if unremarkable) right in the middle of everything, near several subway stations. Worked for us.

Someone I know has just stayed at the Wynn, not in Manhatten but just the other side of one of the bridges check it out.
Also the Novotel just off of Broadway is modern and handy for all the sights!

In Brooklyn, the William Vale is relatively new and has great views over Manhattann.
Pricey but a good hotel.

Have you thought about using air bnb to rent an apartment?
This place in Manhattan for instance is just £140 per night.

Stayed at Langham Place on 5th Ave. That was quality, whacking great room with the Empire State building for a view. Not that you'd be interested much.

Affinia Manhattan not too trumpy and bang in the middle. No need to fuck around with taxis you can walk almost anywhere ftom there. There's niles bar on the ground floor that stays open all night(I'm barred for life) great for cocktails.

The Sanderson's sister hotel the Hudson. Also stayed at the paramount which is decent. Both midtown but work booked them. Downtown is where its at to go out, but sherberts are quick and reasonable

Increasingly use Airbnb these days wherever I go. Got a very decent two bed apartment for us and the kids last time I went for around the same money as an only reasonable hotel room.
